2011 Rocky Mountain State Games — Juniors

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Suzaran’s junior athletes competed at the 2011 Rocky Mountain State Games on July 30, 2011:

  • Dalton Evans
  • Greg Pappadakis
  • Emil Tapper

Dalton Evans

This was Dalton’s second tournament and he was first out of the Suzuran athletes. It is evident that Dalton is gaining experience in the art of Judo now knowing exactly what to do in a judo match.

Dalton’s first match was fast; Dalton threw his opponent for Ippon and the win of the match. In his second match, Dalton again faced Jordan Moore of Denver Judo. The match saw a back and forth battle with Dalton being ahead before Jordan succeeded to throw Dalton with a kneedrop Seoi Nage for Ippon. In his third match, Dalton took a page out of Jordan’s book throwing his opponent using a kneedrop Seoi Nage but for some reason, he ref (Mary!) didnt give him Ippon. :) Still, Dalton wins the match on a pin for Ippon.

Surprisingly, Jordan lost his third match on Ippon, which meant that Dalton and Jordan both had two Ippon wins and one loss. In such cases, the individual meet counts, which meant that Jordan walked away with the gold and Dalton with the silver. Great job Dalton!

Greg Pappadakis

What better way to begin Judo competitions than the Rocky Mountain State Games? Greg was visibly nervous about competing during the last week regardless of reassurances that he would do just fine. And did Greg ever! Greg fought two matches countering both his opponents landing them flat on their backs for Ippon and the gold of his first-ever the tournament! That gold sure looks good, doesn’t it? :)

Emil Tapper

Emil has been feeling under the weather since returning from the Junior Olympics. Therefore, we were not sure whether Emil would be ready to compete. On Saturday morning, Emil was still coughing and had a slight fever but he decided to compete anyway.

As usual with Emil’s division, something unusual happened. This time, all the divisions had been called to the mat but Emil’s. A quick check revealed that the tournament organizers had forgotten to print out the bracket. Groan.

Eventually, Emil’s first match was against Isaac from the OTC. The match was quickly over with Emil countering Issac for an Ippon. Aiden and Isaac (both from the OTC) then met with Aiden winning on Ippon. Therefore, the final match between Emil and Aiden was for the gold, a match that Emil quickly won on Ippon. Another gold for Suzuran!

Chisholm, Good for Gold

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

An excerpt from the The Pikes Peak Courier View:

Confidence.

It is a word and a belief that can take one a long way.

For Thomas Chisholm, it recently took him straight to the top of the podium where he picked up a gold medal in judo at the 2011 Junior Olympics in Irving, Texas.

Chisholm, 16, who is heading into his junior year at Woodland Park High School, won the gold in the 66 kg division (145 pounds) in the 15-16 year-old age bracket in what is the top national tournament in the sport.

Thomas Chisholm Wins Gold at the 2011 Junior Olympics

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Irving Texas, July 22-23, 2011

Suzuran Judo sent three athletes to compete at the 2011 Junior Olympics in Irving, Texas:

  • Emil Tapper (8)
  • Thomas Chisholm (16)
  • Daniel Chisholm (18)

Traveling Day, July 21, 2011

The athletes saw an early morning on Thursday July 21 flying from Colorado to Texas. Stepping out at the Dallas-Forth Worth airport was an experience in itself… the heat was incredible.

Once at the hotel, it was time for Emil and Thomas to registeer and weigh-in. Thomas, who arrived earlier in the day, had to stand in line for hours before he finally could step on the scale showing that he made weight to compete in the 66 kg division. Emil, who arrived later in the day, had an easier time in his registration making weight to compete in the 26 kg division.

For Emil and Thomas, the evening included some relaxing time in the pool and a quick bite to eat. Meanwhile, Sensei Jeff spent his time with the other coaches overlooking the draw for the 850-some athletes that were scheduled to compete the next day. This process was long and did not complete until after 1 AM in the morning.

Once the draw was complete, we learned that Thomas’ division included 11 athletes while Emil’s division included 21 atlethes. Rarely do we see tournaments of this size.

Day 1: July 22, 2011

Thomas Chisholm

Both Emil and Thomas competed on Mat 5 Day 1. Thomas’ division ran in Session 1 while Emil’s division ran in Session 3. That’s right, yet another tournament where younger athletes have to wait all day to compete! This makes absolutely no sense as it affects these young athletes negatively.

Thomas first match was the third match on the mat and he started the day with a nice throw for a Yuko followed by a strong pin winning the match on Ippon. The second match saw Thomas blocking several throw attempts from his opponent after which Thomas starting to increase the intensity level. After another blocked throw attempt, Thomas’ opponent found himself in a position no one wants to be in… Thomas applying a choke. A few seconds later, the choke has done its job with the opponent tapping.

The third match includes a solid throw for what looked like a clear Ippon. Unfortunately, the opponent spun so fast that the Ippon was waived off. Thomas continued to show case his ability to block any throw from his opponent while attempting throws himself. One of the throws awards Thomas a Yuko, which eventually wins the match.

The fourth match is a short with Thomas’ opponent being blocked when trying a throw. Thomas tries a throw himself, which lands him a position for a choke ending the match. After the match, it turns out that his opponent has twisted his knee. We never want to see an opponent being hurt so we hope for a quick recovery.

To this point, Thomas hasn’t even lost a point or received a penalty. Now, it’s time for a match for the gold!

The opponent in the fifth match is Jack Hatton from the Jason Morris Judo Center, Glenville in New York. Thomas continues to show off his capabilities to block throws. Strangely, Thomas gets penalized for stepping out of bounds several times but the video shows that his foot is still within bounds. Clearly, the referee wasn’t clear that both feet have to be outside the contest area for a Shido to be called. Thomas does get a Yuko but loses the match on penalties. To quote Mark Hatton, Jack’s dad: “Thomas got robbed on the match.”

However, the day isn’t over because the tournament is run as a true double elimination. Now, both Thomas and Jack have lost one match each. This means that they have fight each another once again.. this time truly for the gold.

Match 6 becomes a tactical affair with Thomas blocking throw attempts. The only point in the match is a Yuko awarded to Thomas after a counter to a counter. The match ends with Thomas running out the clock by staying active on the ground. Thomas won the gold in the 66 kilos class at the 2011 Junior Olympics!

Most amazingly, no opponent was able to throw Thomas or even score a single technical point. US Judo might not have known who Thomas Chisholm was before this tournament but they certainly do now!

Sitting with Thomas, it took a good 10 minutes before the whole thing sank in… suddenly, Thomas face lit up in a huge grin. Priceless.

Emil Tapper

After a long wait, it was finally Emil’s time to compete around 4:30 PM. Luckily, Corbin Mallo from Northglenn was competing in the same division so the two high energy boys were able to be bored together.

The first match shows how much Emil’s Randori has improved as Emil is now blocking many grip attempts and stepping around throws. For some reason, Emil isn’t pulling guard on the ground going to the knees instead… more to work on there. The match goes full time and golden score, which Emil unfortunately loses on a Yuko.

The second match is against what looks like a wrestler. The match goes back and forth with Emil again going to his knees rather than guard on the ground. The opponent is picking Emil’s leg on the ground, which is a move Emil hasn’t seen before (a new move to learn!) but figures out how to defend quickly. Emil is ahead on a Yuko at the end of the match where he pins his opponent in a side mount, which is a pin he never want to use in training. This time, he holds the pin for Ippon and wins the match.

The third match is a short one with Emil pretty much throwing himself awarding the opponent Ippon. With that, Emil’s day is over.

Per Sensei Jeff, Emil shows great improvement and that he really does belong at this level of competition. We will chalk this up in the experience column to compete another day.

Celebration

With the end of Emil’s tournament, the team went out to celebrate Thomas’ gold at Benihana. It was a sight to see the boys gape over the show at the Hibachi table. :D

For Emil, the day ended with a lot of time in the pool, which he truly enjoys. He slept well that night.

Day 2: July 22, 2011

Dan Chisholm

Dan’s matches took place on Mat1.

Unfortunately, the camera man for the day was trying to watch Mary’s first match so most of Dan’s first match was missed… all but the final Ippon that won the match for Dan. (Dan’s match is in the background of the video).

Dan’s second match started out well. Unfortunate, Dan accidentally does an illegal move with his leg and gets disqualified for both the match and the tournament. Sometimes, the margins aren’t on your side. Clearly, there’s no intent in Dan’s move as showed in the video… Dan doesn’t even know that it happened.

A very upsetting end for the Suzuran team. We will learn and come back stronger than ever!

Other Day 2 Matches

Representing the OTC, Josh Brown and Mary Decker also fought on Day Two. Josh lost his first match, won two just to lose the fourth match. Mary lost her first match, won the second match, and lost her third match. Neither Josh nor Mary placed.

Closing Remarks

We are, of course, extremely proud over Thomas’ gold medal but also Emil’s valiant efforts. Our heart goes out to Dan with the hope that he’ll be back for another tournament or two before it’s time for Marine boot camp.

Overall, the hard training that preceeded this tournament was extremely helpful for our athletes. The team that has trained with Dan, Emil, and Thomas deserve a lot of recognition for helping our three boys prepare for this tournament. The Suzuran team is growing and we hope that more of our athletes will be found competing on a mat close to you in the near future.

Happy throwing!

2011 Colorado Judo League State Championships

Monday, June 20th, 2011

The 2011 edition of the Colorado Judo League (CLJ) State Champions were held at the Northglenn Recreation Center on Saturday June 18, 2011. Unfortunely, the timing of this event is such as many athletes are travelling to compete internationally or simply out-of-state due to the summer break. Therefore, not all athletes that should show.

However, the Suzuran competition team showed up being represented by:

  • Emil Tapper, boys 8-9 junior regular, 57 lbs.
  • Thomas Chisholm, men senior regular, 73 kg (160.9 lbs)
  • Dan Chisholm, men senior regular, 81 kg (178.5 lbs)

Emil Tapper

The saga of late tournament starts for Emil’s group continued. This time, the first match in Emil’s division started at 11:45; that is, last in the junior division and well after the older kids had finished competing.

Emil’s first match saw another fight against Corbin Mallo from Northglenn. Emil won the match on Ippon after a beautiful counter on a counter.

Emil’s second opponent was Austin Gough from Hyland Hills Judo, who easily threw Emil for Ippon at the 2011 OTC Spring Classic. Not so this time; the match was a true battle back and forth. Unfortunately, Emil lost the match on a single Yuko. Austin went on to win the state championship in the division.

Emil’s third opponent was Aiden Markussen from the OTC Judo Club. As always, the boys had a hard fight with Aiden succeeding his signature counter move for Wazari. Emil came back throwing Aiden for Yuko (could as well had been a Wazari) and Aiden received to penalties scoring Emil another Yuko. Unfortunately, time ran out and Emil was done for the day.

Thomas Chisholm

Thomas decided to compete in the men’s 73 kg senior division only skipping the junior division completely. Thomas made quick work of his opponents walking away with the gold and the state championship!

Thomas also competed in the open division winning his first match but losing the second match against a much larger opponent. At the end, Thomas took bronze in the open division.

  2. Joshua Farra, Liberty Bell Judo, Coatsville, PA
  3. Cody Malloy, Hyland Hills Judo Club, Westminster, CO

Daniel Chisholm

Dan shows up to the tournament after vomiting the night before and after very little sleep. No matter, Dan walks through his opponents for the gold in the 183 lbs senior men regular division.

As Thomas, Dan also fights in the open division. Dan’s first match in this division is epic; a battle against a man a head taller than Dan. AS the video shows, Dan has to fight very hard to win the match even though it looks like he wins the match at 1:31 into the video.

A quick rest and then it’s time for Dan’s second match, now being very tired. Again, Dan is in a battle eventually winning by forcing the black-belt opponent to tap out due to a very tight hold.

Dan’s third match is for the gold against a a larger opponent that holds a brown belt in Judo and a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Dan fights bravely but eventually gets submitted leaving Dan with the silver in the open division.

2011 OTC Spring Tournament

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

The OTC Spring Tournament took place at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on Saturday May 07, 2011. The following competitors represented Suzuran Dojo:

  • Dalton Evans
  • Emil Tapper
  • Daniel Chisholm

The videos has been found but unfortunately, the videos showing Dan are too long to update. We’re working on it.

Dalton Evans

This was Dalton’s first tournament and what a job he did fightning Jordan Moore from Denver Judo. Dalton won the first and third match on Ippon getting pinned in the second match. At the end, Dalton won a gold medal in his very first tournament.

Videos of Dalton’s matches:

Emil Tapper

Emil’s bracket was the last bracket out in the junior division — why does this always happen. Emil’s first match was against Corbin Mallo from Northgleen Judo. This time, it was Corbin’s turn to win throwing Emil for Ippon. Emil’s second match was against Austin Gough from Hyland Hills.  Austin walked right up throwing a surprise Emil for Ippon.

Videos of Emil’s matches:

Daniel Chisholm

Dan was out sick all week but decided to compete anyway in typical Dan fashion. Dan’s first match was a battle back and forth that Dan eventually won on Ippon. If the first match was a battle then the second match was a war going into overtime with no points scored after 7 minutes of fightning (almost 20 minutes clock time). Unfortunately, Dan’s opponent was awarded the advantage thereby causing Dan to lose the match ending up with a silver for the day.

2011 Northglenn 43rd Annual Judo Championships

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Suzuran Dojo brought a team of three competitors to the 2011 Northglenn Judo Championships. Although a little smaller than previous years, the tournament was still packed with national talent. Our team of Dan, Thomas, and Emil showed some talent of their own however, despite their lack of experience.

Due to weigh-in rules, the team had to weigh in Friday night seeing both Dan and Thomas cutting weight. Emil (24.5 kg) and Thomas (65.9 kg) made weight immediately while Dan still had 0.7 kg to cut. After some running, the scale showed Dan weighing 72.9 kg and, to everybody’s relief, the weigh-in was done and over with. Therefore, the team went out to have a good steak dinner at Outback’s.

After dinner, Emil hit the pool with Dan showing up for a little while swimming with Emil on his back. Great fun and then up to the hotel room for sleep, which was very hard to come by with Emil falling asleep at 11:30 PM.

Saturday morning saw a good breakfast and a 15-minutes drive to the tournament.

At the end of the day, Dan finished in 5th place defeating two blackbelts in arguably the tournament’s toughest division at 73 kg, and Thomas also held his own in the 66 kg division. Thomas then easily won the junior 77 kg division defeating long time rival Ian Cheatum in 3 out of 3 matches. Emil wasn’t quite as prepared mentally as he had been in recent tournaments possibly due to the juniors competing after the seniors for the first time, but still looked very impressive in his second match where he beat a strong adversary for the second time in a row. We’re very proud of these three youngsters!!

Dan Chisholm

Due to parental confusion, we thought that Senior Elite was separate from Senior Regular causing Dan to have to change into his gi in the car and rush to his first match, which he unfortunately lost on Ippon.

Dan proceeded to beat black belts in his next two matches winning Match 2 with a beautiful choke and Match 3 on Ippon. Dan’s fourth match was against Matthew Parker from the OTC with Dan taking the match to Matthew. At the end, Matthew throws Dan for Ippon, which ends the day for Dan.

Overall, a good showing for Dan showing that he’s ready to start to compete at the next level.

Thomas Chisholm

Thomas fought in two divisions: 66 kg Senior Elite and 73 kg Junior Advanced.

66 kg Senior Elite

Thomas’ second match was against Austin Cook, who among many other successes won the 66 kg division at the 45th Annual Dallas Invitational Judo Championships. The speed of the match was good showcasing Thomas’ ongoing improvements in grip fighting. At the end, Austin throws Thomas for Ippon leaving Thomas with the bronze of the division.

As with Dan, Thomas is showing that he’s getting ready to compete at the next level in the senior brackets.

73 kg Junior Advanced

There were no opponents for Thomas in the 66 kg division so Thomas fought in the 73 kg with Ian Cheatum being the only opponent

  • Match 1Thomas beats Ian on points.
  • Match 2Thomas beats Ian on points.
  • Match 3Thomas beats Ian with a very nice choke.

The improvements in Thomas’ grip fighting is clearly shown in these matches — do watch the videos!

Emil Tapper

After a long wait (and a LOT of playing), it was finally Emil’s turn to fight. The first match was against Anjelo Lazado from Hyland Hills Judo Club, who’s a new opponent for Emil. For some reason, Emil didn’t fight on the ground as he normally does so he lost the match being pinned.

Emil’s second match was against Corbin Mallo from Northglenn Judo Club. As always, the match against Corbin was fast, entertaining, and very back-and-forth. Emil’s changed approach in the ground game moved to a lay-and-pray approach, which almost allowed Corbin to pin Emil. In the end, Emil pins Corbin for Ippon.

Emil’s third match was against Marek Starling from the Denver Buddhist Temple. As in his second match, Emil seemed to think he could handle Marek using a lay-and-pay approach on the ground. He couldn’t allowing Marek to win the match on the pin.

Other Matches

As always, we try to film other matches as the opportunity presents itself.
