Judo and Jujitsu
Judo is both a grappling sport and martial art derived from the ancient Japanese fighting forms of Jujitsu. It is not based on strength, but on one’s ability to perform the techniques properly and quickly.
Best known for its spectacular throwing techniques, judo also involves pins, control holds, joint locks, and chocking techniques. All of these skills make judo an effective, realistic and practical self defense system.
Judo, as an exciting grappling sport utilizing the above mentioned techniques, is the second most popular sport in the world in terms of participation and has been an Olympic sport since 1964. It is excellent for wrestlers or anyone else who may like a one-on-one full contact grappling sport.

What About Competition?
There are separate age and weight divisions for both boys and girls and men and women.
Although we have a strong team camaraderie at Suzuran Judo Club, judo is a individual sport where one person competes against another in a safe environment adhering to strict rules.
These rules are enforced by a referee and two judges. Unlike team sports, there are no “bench warmers” in judo.
EVERONE IS A STARTER!
For those who want to compete, judo offers the opportunity for competition at all skill levels. These range from local, state, and national, to international, world and Olympic championships.
Judo is taught strictly as self defense in our adult classes for those that are not interested in competing. In this class there are many joint locks, throws and striking techniques that are not allowed in competition judo but are essential and extremely effective for self defense.
